How to ship a pet as a carry on?

Posted by admin On July - 22 - 2010

I’m moving back to British Columbia. I have a Chinchilla and a hundred pound cage (pretty much brand new) its the Critter Nation Cage.

Air Canada lets you bring pets as a carry on,but I’m only 16 and it says if your an unaccompanied minor you arent allowed. Also it only talks about cats and small dogs. No chinchillas?

Also how would I get the cage from Ontario to BC? I’m on a budget.

As expensive as this willbe, I don’t really care. He’s my baby.

Call the airline and ask about the Chinchilla. At 16, I do not believe you need to be considered an unaccompanied minor. The term unaccompanied minor refers to a service the airline offers to basically babysit the kid on the plane so you can understand why they don’t want to be responsible for both a kid and pet. However on most US airlines kids over 13, do not need to have this service. You would just travel as a regular passenger. I would clarify the unaccompanied minor thing then work on the chinchilla. Shipping a 100lb cage is going to be expensive, that is just the way it is. Go to your local mailbox/shipping store/post office and ask them to find the cheapest way to ship it. If you do carry your pet on you will need a small cage/carrier that fits under the seat in front of you for him to go in. That is the only way they allow you to bring your pet on board.

Sorry to say that you really <<must>> call the airline to ask them about this situation.

If the rules say that unaccompanied minors cannot bring pets into the cabin, then that is the way it will be. If you want your chinchilla to come on the plane, then it will have to go as cargo - not in the cabin.

Please call the airline to find out how to do this. It will not be cheap, though.
