Chinchillas are fun pets. They’re the softest thing ever, but they are harder to get supplies for than say, a hamster because they are exotic pets. They do chew a lot, so don’t let them near important papers. Chinchillas are very affectionate and like to sit on people’s heads, so if you don’t like stuff messing up your hair, beware of the chinchilla. They don’t need a whole lot of exercise, just unlimited access to an exercise wheel, though they will appreciate coming out of the cage and cuddling. They live around fifteen years, but the oldest recorded chinchilla was 26 years old. They are most active at night, and they make a lot of noise, and it’s pretty unnerving to hear them vocalize in the middle of the night, so I don’t recommend keeping them in your room. The chinchilla itself is kinda expensive, it can run from anywhere between $70 and $500, but is usually around $110 or so. If you can afford them and don’t mind having your hair messed up, I definitely recommend the chinchilla.

Rodents aren’t pets. They are rodents. So, I would say it would make a bad pet.

Chinchillas are certainly VERY cool to look at up close, but make truly lousy pets; they are primarily nocturnal, so are most active when you are asleep and are asleep most of the time you are awake (unless you FORCE them to be awake during the day, which makes them quite angry). They are undomesticated, do not form any kind of "attachment" with their owners, and do not like to be held or cuddled.

Only a very selfish or ill-informed person would take one as a "pet", sorry, but that is the reality!

I have heard they can be good pets, but to me they don’t seem like much fun- not very playful.
