Posted by admin On July - 27 - 2010

I put a deposit on a chinchilla yesterday (from a breeder) I have done A LOT of research and i am ready to start buying things. (he must stay with his mommy for a month) This is the cage i am interested in… http://www.cagesdirect.com/ferret-nation-habitat-625h-p-1019.html
What’s your opinion? If you don’t like it do you have any suggestions.
I am buying wood and shelving fleece liners and removing the ramps and metal shelves.
Also he is a standard v/c, i know what a standard is but what is v/c?
☺♥ Thanks in advance! ♥☺

V/C means standard violet carrier. It means if you breed him he could have a violet chinchilla offspring. As for the cage, I love them! My chins go crazy for that cage and it keeps my cat away from them as well. Be sure to get good furnishings for the cage such as leaping ledges and hammocks and tubes and chewing blocks.

Oh don’t buy the cage from that website because it’s cheap, but the shipping will cost you $50. Go to ferret.com and the shipping is a flat $5.99. I got two cages from them and sometimes they have a special on that model for 179.99

that is a good cage, you might also want to invest in a cyllinder cape for him and an air conditioner that is made of pink plastic among other things

I LOVE CHINCHILLA QUESTIONS AND CAGE QUESTIONS SO THANK YOU:)

That is the PERFECT website for you! The person reccomends a ferret nation cage for chins so it is truly perfect-they turned a ferret cage into a chin cage themselves and they have a picture-what they did is GREAT and it sounds like you’re on the right track!!! They also have plans for making your own cage which I did for my chinchilla, using everything they said to use. And they have examples of good and bad bird cages to use!!! Petstore cages that say ‘for chinchillas’ are usually very wrong and I’m sooo happy you know this:) I searched everywhere and couldn’t find a cage in my budget that was good for a chin, so I just made one. I’m sooo happy you’re removing the metal shelves and getting wood-I’m sure you know kiln dried, untreated pine for shelving; and ramps are not necassary cause they’re such climbers and fantastic jumpers.
I also have a boy who I got almost 2 months ago (I think its been about that long). He’s violet (light grey) and was born in November 2009. He’s still playing in a playpen area I made for him out of chicken wire cause he’s in the extra room in my house and I’m still clearing all the junk out of it-he’ll have the whole room soon though and I’m putting up some shelves on the walls so he has fun places to jump to while playing cause they get bored so easy and that’s not good for them. I sit with him for about 2-4 hours a night and he jumps all over me and climbs onto my hands so I can take him to explore things he can’t get to on his own, like the window. He’s not a cuddler like the very few out there that are, but he’s totally comfortable with me now and lets me hold him for a few minutes at a time. Then gives me a gentle little nibble to tell me he’s done and ready to run and play instead, lol:) I adore him and so does my 3 year old, but with super supervision cause she gets hyper sometimes and is not allowed to hold him yet till she’s more mature:) He also used to do the taste test bites often, so if you don’t know about this-they don’t hurt. Its like a gentle pinch just to see if you’re a raison and I don’t mind it. My daughter doesn’t like it and he still does it to her, but it honestly does not hurt!
I’ll name some things that are in his cage and play area that you probably already know about, but just in case:
In his cage which is 24×24x36 and I’m adding on soon:
    -2 kiln dried pine shelves
-2 removable bird shelves that I secured wood onto instead of leaping ledges (they’re bigger than leaping ledges and from Petsmart or Petco and when he chews up the wood, the metal base is still good so I just add new)
-1 pumice ledge from Petsmart or Petco-can’t remember which, sorry-he LOVES this-chews, sits, and scratches it constantly so I highly reccomend this for all chins and most rodents!!!
    -1 grass mat
-1 hanging bird toy made of wood, sizzle rope, and leather because I read cotton rope is not good for chins
-a roll-a-nest which he sleeps in and LOVES so I highly reccomend it!!!
-a big bird ladder going from the floor to 1st shelf (if he falls through, he can’t possibly get stuck in it at all-its big-and only falls a few inches)-he likes climbing it and chewing on it.
-a hammock which he goes in but not often so I’m considering taking it out until I add on to give him more free space
-a pumice block-he likes the ledge better though
-lots of wood chews and 3 applewood chews at a time
-a wooden chew toy thing from Petco or Petsmart
    -an empty saltine cracker box
-a glass casserole dish (rrectangle and small) on the floor of his cage with shavings that I’m trying to get him to pee in, lol, like a litter box:)
-I use fleece lining on the bottom of his cage but may go back to shavings if the litter box idea doesn’t work cause changing it every other day is a pain-I made the doors of his cage too small-very mad at myself for that, but the addon will be the new bottom so the doors will be BIG!!!
-Of course fresh timothy hay, food (I free feed causse they rarely overeat-only when bored I think), and his glass water bottle
Out of cage which will soon be a lot more:
-the roll-a-nest box he climbs on and hides in
    -4 cardboard tunnels
-a few other boxes from various foods-like popcorn, cereal, etc for climbing purposes, jumping, chewing, and hiding purposes
-more wood chew toys, applewood, and hay
-anything else I can find to entertain him thats safe like the big tub I keep all his food and hay in-I let him jump on it last night (he didn’t chew it cause its plastic and you know NEVER any plastic for chins) and it entertained him for a good 1/2 hour.
They cut off some of this so my email is kc_44731@yahoo.com-email w/ anything to do with chins:) &http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31 is a great forum for all chin topics:) Good luck:)

Hmm, I like the cage the way it is. And I’m sure the chin would too! I don’t think you should change it. The chin’s feet won’t get damaged if that is what you are worried about happening. To prevent foot damage buy things with solid bottoms for him to sit on like hammocks or a granite slab (they sell them at petstores), you could also put a shelter with a bottom like a box.
