what are good reasons for getting a chinchilla as a pet?
im trying to convince my dad to let me get one and i need a good case.
Pros:
They are cute as heck.
They are highly entertaining to watch.
They have a much longer lifespan than other rodents (rats, hammies, gerbils). They can live even in excess of 25 years.
If you keep their cage clean, they have little to no odor.
Once you get all their stuff (cage, toys, food, etc.) they are fairly low maintenance, but the initial outlay can be quite a chunk.
Food wise, they are pretty cheap monthly if you only have one.
Cons (which to me aren’t cons, but points to think on):
They require specific temperature guidelines to survive.
Their vet bills can be very hefty as they are considered an exotic.
They have to dust. No matter how hard you try, that dust goes everywhere. Even when people dust in the bathtub, it still flies everywhere.
They poop - a LOT. It’s not gross or squishy, but it does get throw everywhere.
They are not able to be litter trained. So, when you let them out to play, expect to sweep up after them and that they will poop. If they are breathing, they are pooping.
They are not cuddly, clutchy, kitty type of animals. They easily over heat and that can cause a heat stroke and death.
Their live span can be 25 years. That means while you’re in school, dating, shopping, going to college, getting married maybe even having kids. You don’t get to dump them because your life gets busy.
So - There is more, but you get the general picture. I’m not sure there is much there to convince your dad with. Most people get chinchillas because they have done a lot of research and they love them. Other than that, see above.

To be honest with you, the only good reason I could find is that they are fun. They are hyper animals so it’s interesting to watch them, but there’s not much you can usually do with them. They are animals you watch from a distance. They’re not social at all. They also live for a very long time, which is another good reason to keep them.
But there are a lot of not so good reasons to have one than good. But if you can’t figure out the good reasons for yourself, why are you getting one? That seems a little strange to me. If you really wanted one that badly you’d be able to think up plenty of reasons. Try researching them. Chinchilla’s can die easily so people brush up on knowledge.
Before you get a chinchilla, keep in mind that chinchilla’s are very energetic animals. They need to be in a big cage and they need to be let out every day to run around. They love to go crazy and bounce off the walls. If you want a pet that you can actually pet and hold, a chinchilla isn’t good for you. They don’t like to be pet for long, especially when they are out of their cage, and they rarely let you hold them. They constantly squirm in your arms to try and get away and never stay still. If you are stubborn and try to keep them in your arms, this can stress them out. Stress causes death for chinchilla’s.
Also you better make sure that your temperature is NEVER above 76 degrees or your chinchilla is going to have a heatstroke and die. That’s something you need to stay on top of at all times.

Alright, well I’m going to tell you why chinchillas make good pets, but they really don’t. You’ve probably done research and decided that chinchillas are cute and cuddly. They’re not. I know I’m not answering your question, but I don’t want you to be disappointed. Go ahead and get a chinchilla, just know that it is likely that it will not be happy, you will not be able to hold it, and it will be scared of you.
Some good reasons to get chinchillas are….. they’re cute… Oh boy, there really aren’t a whole lot of good reasons to get a chinchilla…
