Pet Chinchilla Injured and Wounded in Aspen, Colorado

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2009

We had just completed climbing the Maroon Bells (took us almost 11 hours!) and went into Aspen for a late dinner. In front of the Explore Book Store (where they have a great vegetarian bistro on the second floor) I spotted this Chinchilla on the public sidewalk. I suspect it was somebody’s pet that got away and was probably hit by a car. It was still alive but acting a bit strange. The other passersby took it to a nearby pet store for proper care and attention.

Here’s my personal web page about keeping pets in general:

It’s not a chinchilla, but a close relative. at least you were 1/2 right at that… people should never leave pets for the dead like that.

Oh and Aspen is way to cold or just a little to cold for a chinchilla they need about room temperature to survive although it does rather look the same as a chinchilla i must say so i can see why you thought it was a chinchilla

    I dont think that …
I dont think that is a chinchilla its coloring is more similar to a wild rat or viscasha, a chinchilla relative. Sizing also indicates that this is not a chinchilla it is to small and nose is very pointed. I think it might just be cross between a wild rat and a chinchilla or it could be some other animal entirely.

You’re correct! However, I’m not from Aspen so I relied on the locals, there at the scene, to take over - I figured they knew best where to go, etc.

Some of the other people going along the sidewalk took the chinchilla to a local pet store for immediate care and attention. I live about 150 miles (240 km) from Aspen so I was not able to follow-up as we had a long drive ahead of us that evening…
