chinchillas OK in outdoor habitat?
On July - 20 - 2010
We have an outdoor bunny hut that can house 2 animals. As of now we only have 1 bunny and we were thinking of getting a chinchilla but i wanted to know if a chinchilla would be OK in an outdoor home? The coop is nice and has an indoor and outdoor area for the animal to go into, but would the chinchilla be OK just being outdoors??

RDZC Says:
No, chinchillas need to be in a climate controlled INDOOR room. If they reach temperatures over 80 degrees they will suffer heat stroke and have seizures which will result in either severe brain damage or death. Chinchillas also cannot be housed with or near rabbits. Rabbits can carry a disease called pasturella that is fatal to chinchillas. They need an indoor cage with an a/c if your area ever gets over 78 degrees.

no. they need a very controlled environment. they also need TONS of attention or they will get depressed. Seriously. Do you plan on sitting next to the hutch for hours everyday, playing with your outdoor chinchilla? for all 15 years of its life?
