Can ferrets and chinchillas play together?

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2009

I have four ferrets (3 males and a female) that play together great in their playpen, but I am going to be adding four chinchillas to our family soon (two males and two females). Will they get along or will I have to keep their playtimes separate? Any information you have will be great. Thanks.

No, they cannot play together. Ferrets are mousers and will most likely go after the chinchilla and could possibly kill it. A chinchilla can also do damage to a ferret, but will most likely lose the battle. It’s ok to have both, but never let them together.

I had both at one time and one of the ferrets and one of the chins got out together (chin cage wasn’t latched right) and there was a little rumble. The ferret got a bite on the nose and a mouthful of the chinchilla’s hair. If I hadn’t been right there, both could have been seriously injured and one could have even died. Do not let any type of rodent out to play with a ferret.

How can I induce my chinchillas to breed?

Posted by admin On September - 26 - 2009

I have 1 male and 2 females. When I first got all of them I had one male and three females and on of the females gave birth to two kits. It’s been a while (and sadly the female chinchilla passed away) and my chinchillas have not seemed to mate or show any signs of prgnancey. I really want to have some more babies, but I really don’t know what conditons they will breed under. If you can please tell me the condidtions that they do and vitamins i can give them, ect…

From what you have said, I can assume that the females that you currently have are the daughters of the male cat you still have is that right? If so, I would not be breeding them back with their father as that is inbreeding, in saying that if you are a breeder then you would know about line breeding and would know when it ok to put a parent cat back with its offspring. Most times I would say, Don’t do it. there can be to many complications. Also how old are your females now? and is there a reason you are wanting more babies? They have to come In season for them to be interested and there is nothing you can do to make them come in season. I can give you more information if you wish to add me to yahoo or email me.

They have a new cage,they spent last night in new cage but were freaked this morning,put them back in old cage. But new cage is better. One of my chinchillas gets freaked out easily and suffers from depression fits. Is it better to just move them in and get rid of old cage or to slowly move them over?
Hope you guys can help!! greatlittleraven@yahoo.com

Gently move them to the new cage, give them the same food bowls and water bottles they had in the old cage, along with any other toys/hide-outs, etc….
Give them a dust bath in the new cage, ASAP…
they are not freaking out so much about the new cage, as the NEW VIEW from the new cage.
Just do it and let them adjust… do not project things onto your sweet pets.
What are "depression fits"? Never seen a chin have one in my 10 years around chins.
Edit!::::
Megs, if you want them in the new cage, put them there and leave them there….. If you let them go there by themselves, and they are upset later, then are not going to associate that with you… you are just projecting that on them.
Either they go there, or they stay where they are at… you are just dragging it out otherwise. They maybe a bit confused… then leave them there and just take care of their needs for a few days, including the bath… do this for a few days…. They will adjust faster then you think.
