Can ferrets and chinchillas play together?

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2009

I have four ferrets (3 males and a female) that play together great in their playpen, but I am going to be adding four chinchillas to our family soon (two males and two females). Will they get along or will I have to keep their playtimes separate? Any information you have will be great. Thanks.

No, they cannot play together. Ferrets are mousers and will most likely go after the chinchilla and could possibly kill it. A chinchilla can also do damage to a ferret, but will most likely lose the battle. It’s ok to have both, but never let them together.

I had both at one time and one of the ferrets and one of the chins got out together (chin cage wasn’t latched right) and there was a little rumble. The ferret got a bite on the nose and a mouthful of the chinchilla’s hair. If I hadn’t been right there, both could have been seriously injured and one could have even died. Do not let any type of rodent out to play with a ferret.

in the respect that all they require is a big enough cage+ the necessities like food, water and attention? Is there anything special that they require? Are they friendly and easy to handle? Do they bite? I would appreciate anything you can tell me about them? Thank you!

Chinchilla’ can be friendly, shy, aggressive. It all depends on their personality. I have a snuggler and one that will not let us hold her but she loves scratches under her chin and on her nose. Some bite some don’t, mine nip if scared but have never drawn blood. They can have medical conditions that can be hard to treat, malocclusion being one of them. I would suggest looking here for more info and to find a breeder or rescue that can help pick a chinchilla that would work for you.

Chinchilla’s do not stink, unless you dont’ clean their cage. Also cedar is toxic to chinchilla’s, please make sure you have researched well.

Where can i get a good chinchilla cage?

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2009

I have a 4 year old blind chinchilla, the cage i had for him was stolen, my family was robbed. I was wondering where can i get a nice sized chinchilla cage, for not so much money. something reasonable,

if you know places, name them, give me some links to some sites, recommend ..anything..

Try looking on cragistlist.com or ebay.com.

I found a one level cage on ebay, since I don’t think a blind chinchilla needs levels to fall off of.

This one is $45 including shipping.

Your best bet may just be your local PetSmart, PetCo, or farm supply store for a rabbit or guinea pig cage.

On PetSmart.com I was able to find this one…

Is it illegal to have a pet chinchilla in California?

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2009

I heard that it’s illegal to own a chinchilla in California. Is this true? My sister really wants one but if it’s illegal…well then I guess that can’t happen.

NO! they aren’t illegal (otherwise I’d be in jail now lol)
Get one! They are easy to maintain, and some just love being cuddled!
