Chinchilla as a pet? please help?

Posted by admin On May - 31 - 2010

I was wondering if Chins make good pets? I’ve had guniea pigs all my life and i want to get something new something that has a long life expectancy as wel. But i have heard chins arent as affectionate or cuddly or friendly as guniea pigs? Do they bite a lot? Is it possible with a lot of holding and love they will grow to be affectionate?

I am a freshman in college and will be getting an apartment next year and i want a small pet for my birthday in March. I want the chinchilla because they are ADORABLE and life for a long time, but they arent very friendly I have read. I would like the rabbit because they are cuddly and friendly, can be trained, but doesnt have a long life span. Any one have any ideas to help me make up my mind!?

Chinchilla as a pet? Looking for advice.?

Posted by admin On May - 29 - 2010

I am considering a Chinchilla as a pet and doing a little research about their needs. I have an active but friendly cat who will be very interested in the Chin but is extremely unlikely to be aggressive toward it; she wants to "play" with ALL creatures, even our frog. The Chin, if I get one, will have a large three-story cage and good care — but the cat will probably watch it constantly, and likely ‘pounce’ the sides of the cage frequently when the Chin is active, wanting to play. Will the Chin be okay with this arrangement, or will it be too stressful? Advice from experienced Chinchilla owners preferred, please.
Rose, thank you, that’s the type of response I’m looking for — I know cats; I don’t know chinchillas. I’ve heard that they can get along well with cats; I’d like more viewpoints on this if there are any other chinchilla-knowledgeable people out there!
After researching online, and reading the responses here — I think a Chinchilla would not be suitable. If I get a second pet, I’ll look for one less prone to stress. Thanks for the advice!
