Chinchilla As Pet

How would you describe your experiences as a chinchilla owner?

What do you feel are the good things about them and the bad things?

How do you interact with a chinchilla?
Is it true they do not like to be touched or held?

Honestly how would you describe your relationship with this type of pet?

My husband is deploying and has fallen in LOVE with the idea of having a chinchilla to come home to… I’m not opposed to this idea… but I wonder… would we be biting off more than we can chew?

What is the real TRUTH about the pet known as CHINCHILLA!!?

I know most sites I’ve come across lump the personalities of any type of animal into one category or another…

I would like to know how individuals have felt about knowing and spending time with their particular chins.

I was wondering if Chins make good pets? I’ve had guniea pigs all my life and i want to get something new something that has a long life expectancy as wel. But i have heard chins arent as affectionate or cuddly or friendly as guniea pigs? Do they bite a lot? Is it possible with a lot of holding and love they will grow to be affectionate?

Dory was a rescue. She was diagnosed with malocclusion in November 2008. Sadly she lost her fight against the horrors of this disease on Sunday 25th January 2009. She was two years old.
In the seven months in which we shared our lives, she brought me so much joy and she taught me what real love is.
She will be missed.
R.I.P little Dory

Malocclusion is often genetic.
Please help us to stop the incredible suffering these babies endure
Please DO NOT breed your chinchillas!
There are enough lonely and unloved chinchillas in the world already in need of a home

The boys Bill & Ben fighting over a pine cone…
There were four pine cones in the cage! LOL

WARNING about pinecones…
Cones do not only grow on pine trees. They also grow on other trees like cedar, cypress, yew, juniper, fir and spruce…all of these are on the unsafe wood list.
So if in doubt about the source tree, DON’T use them!

I personally buy them from a rabbit site here in the UK then boil and bake them. You also need to be sure the pinecones are fully open and without any seeds.

There is a debate as to whether pinecones are safe for chinchillas, some people say they are, some do not.
They say that the resin within them is toxic. This is true for all pine, which is why we use kiln dried pine for shelves and other toys. The kiln drying evaporates the sap and makes the wood safe.
Is this the same for the cones when we bake them?
I cannot say or be 100% sure if baking the cones makes them completely safe. My chins get them very occasionally, maybe once or twice a year. They tend to chew off all of the spikey bits, play tug of war LOL and then lose interest, I then throw them away. I have never had a problem.
